Buyer guidance

How to choose a second-hand CPAP or BiPAP

A second-hand respiratory machine can be excellent value, or a quiet problem. Knowing what to look for helps you choose well. Here is what actually matters.

Hours used: the real wear indicator

CPAP and BiPAP machines log total runtime in hours, the way a car logs kilometers. A unit with 500 hours of use is very different from one with 5,000 hours, even if both look clean on the outside. The motor, blower, and internal components age with use. Lower hours means more remaining useful life. Ask for the actual runtime reading before deciding. We share this for every Value Pick on request. It is the single most important number.

Pressure accuracy

A second-hand machine must still deliver the pressure your sleep study prescribed. Our licensed RTs run a pressure calibration check on every Value Pick to confirm it is performing within specifications. A machine that reads 10 cmH2O but delivers 8.5 is not safe for therapy. Calibration is not optional.

Motor condition

Listen for unusual noise: rattling, grinding, or an unusually loud fan can signal internal wear. A well-maintained motor runs quietly and smoothly. Our RT performs a physical inspection and a run test on each unit before listing it. If we have concerns, it does not become a Value Pick.

Hygiene and sanitation

Every Value Pick is sanitized before resale: circuit, humidifier chamber, and accessible internal surfaces cleaned and inspected. Masks and hoses are not reused between patients. Your RT will walk you through cleaning and filter replacement on your setup visit.

What to ask before buying

Before committing to any second-hand machine, ask: How many hours are on this unit? What was the result of the pressure calibration check? Is the humidifier working correctly? Are there any visible signs of wear or previous repair? At Respyre, our RT can walk you through all of this on your free teleconsult. We give straight answers.

Why Value Picks?

Inspected by an RT

Every Value Pick is checked by a licensed respiratory therapist before resale: motor condition, pressure accuracy, hygiene, and cosmetics. No surprises.

Same care bundle

You get the same licensed RT home setup, mask fitting, calibration, and follow-up support as any brand-new bundle. The care doesn't change.
